Forward:
Welcome to Spotlight on Chile! This site is intended to be a synthesis of the knowledge and experiences I gained as a Fulbright-Hays group participant. During five intense weeks from July 12 to August 16, 1997, I had the privilege of living, traveling, and studying in this marvelous country. It was my first venture south of Mexico, and I was determined to make the most of my south american experience. The information you will find here is of both a personal and academic
nature. As a teacher, it is important for me to provide some solid facts
and figures. The information has come from a variety of sources including
Chilean university professors, students, government employees, laborers,
and a variety of people on the street. Written sources include:
Recorro Mi Historia by Andrea Krebs and Magdalena Piñera; Manual del Congreso Nacional 1997; Soldiers in a Narrow Land by Mary Helen Spooner While I have done my best with Spotlight on Chile to share a great deal of what I learned, please understand that this site does not pretend to have everything. The information is limited to what I was able to absorb in five short weeks, and to the cities, towns, people, and places I had the pleasure of getting to know. Nevertheless, I hope you find it both educational and enjoyable.
Special thanks to the following people and organizations for helping make this site a reality:
